Optical Brightening Agent in Paper Product: The danger hidden in white

OBA

There is a derivative of Stilbene in OBA, which has a molecular shape similar to the female hormone estrogen. If Stilbene is taken in large quantities, it will accumulate in the body and may affect the fetus or cause male sexual dysfunction.

Most paper products that come in contact with the human skin is sanitary paper, in case  if it contains OBA. when using sanitary paper to wipe the skin, residue on the skin can cause some people to have an allergic reaction. Also studies have shown that when OBA  are exposed to ultraviolet (UV) radiation from sunlight (wave length 254 nm) may induce skin carcinogens can cause skin cancer

Another paper that direct and indirect contact with human is food paper packaging or paper used for cooking. Most manufacturers do not pay attention to OBA that may contaminate into food and affect the health of consumers.

 

Although in many countries such as Germany and Japan,Paper food packaging is required to be tested for OBA free. But Thailand has no regulations on this matter. However, OBA are toxic substances that should be avoided especially if they come into contact with food and beverages. For the general public, preliminary measurements can be made by using instruments with UV light as a light source, such as banknote detectors.
