France Bans Plastic Packaging For Fruits & Vegetables

The French government has published a list of more than 30 fruits and vegetables (including leeks, aubergines and tomatoes as well as apples, bananas and oranges) that will now be required to be package-free or packaged in recyclable materials from January 1st.

A limited number of delicate or cut fruits and vegetables will be exempt from this ban until June 2026 when it will be phased out.

The ban will come into effect for cherry tomatoes, green beans and peaches in June 2023 and by the end 2024 for endives, asparagus, mushrooms, some salads and herbs as well as cherries.

Also, France has banned the use of plastic straws. cup and cutlery Including polystyrene plastic boxes, in 2021, many European countries have announced similar bans.

 

In  UK, up to 1.1 billion disposable plates and  4,250 million disposable cutlery were used per year , which most of them are made from 'plastic' and only 10% were recycled.

Since 2022,  UK have started banning the use of plastic straw, plastic coffe  pods and plastic cotton swabs Also, it is planning to expand  to ban plastic spoon, forks, and ballon stems thatt can be  replaced by other material.
